Controls and mechanics

Falling in the Pit takes no teaching, it comes on its own. Everything else has to be learned. Especially with a teammate nearby who needs catching. Or kicking.

Pitlords runs in the browser on a computer, a tablet and a phone. On a computer the game is played with the keyboard, on a touch screen with buttons over the game. The core mechanics are the same in every mode, and co-op adds co-op actions and callouts.

In the ranked run a candle at someone else's grave is lit with the F key or a tap on the grave, standing next to it.

Jump

#

While the jump key is held, the character jumps again on every landing. There is no second jump in the air.

Health and falls

#

Short falls are safe. The longer the fall, the more the landing hurts. A very long fall kills whatever health is left.

Healing platforms and the Bugster ability First Aid restore health.

Parachute

#

When a fall turns dangerous, the parachute opens by itself. Under the canopy the character drifts down slowly and can fly sideways to pick where to land. A landing under the parachute is safe.

A run has a limited number of parachutes. When they run out, the Bugster ability Spare can help.

Co-op actions

#

Co-op actions work in co-op only.

Catch

E

Catches a teammate on a dangerous landing.

How it works
The character raises its hands for a short while. If a teammate lands nearby after a dangerous fall in that time, the catcher picks them up and they take no damage.
When to use
Below long jumps and narrow platforms, where it is easy to slip.

Carry

R

Puts a teammate on the shoulders and tosses them higher.

How it works
Next to a teammate, R puts them on the shoulders, and pressing R again tosses them up. With a teammate on the shoulders the character walks slower and jumps lower, and the one on top can jump off on their own.
When to use
On team stretches, where the next ledge is higher than any jump.

Rope

C

Lowers a rope ladder for the whole team.

How it works
Standing on a platform, the character lowers a rope ladder from under the feet, and any player can climb it. Each player has a limited number of ropes: a new one takes down the oldest.
When to use
After climbing up with a lift, drop a rope to the one who lifted.

Kick

F

Pushes a teammate away.

How it works
The nearest teammate flies off the way the kicker is facing. The kick itself does no damage.
Risk
A hard landing after a kick hurts, and near the edge of a platform a kick can send a teammate down, all the way into the Pit.

Callouts

#

A wheel of short phrases for the team, in co-op only. On a computer, hold T, point the mouse at a phrase and let go of T: the phrase appears above the character. With the wheel open, a number from 1 to 8 sends a phrase at once. On a touch screen, hold the callout stick, push it towards the phrase and let go.

Spectating

#

In co-op a player who is out stays in the run as a spectator and switches between the living teammates with the ← → arrows or the ‹ › buttons.

A co-op match in progress can be watched from the lobby. Spectators see the run but do not affect it.

The theory is over

From here on, the falling is practice.
